Every second counts in today’s high paced society. According to a Washington Post article, the average commute to work for Americans is 26 minutes. That is nearly an hour per day spent sitting in a car. For most of us, the is a grey area of the day. You sit on autopilot until you reach your destination. Being on the road does not have to be a waste of time. Here is a simple but effective way to improve your daily commute.
TONE DOWN THE MUSIC
Instead of spending every minute of every drive listening to music, throw in something that will expand your knowledge as you drive. Here are a couple of my favorite substitutes for music.
- Podcasts: Listening to podcasts is a great way to improve your daily commute. You can find a podcast on any topic of discussion. They are a great way to stay connected with your craft. Whether it be fitness and health or business and technology. A podcast is a great way to stay informed. I highly recommend using an app like Castbox for Android or iPhone to find great podcasts on just about any topic.
- Audiobooks: This is my favorite substitute for music. “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, and “How To Stop Worrying and Start Living” are just a couple of great books I was able to finish just while driving. Both of which have provided principles that I use in my daily life. Its also a lot easier to listen to a book than to find time to read. Here are a few good ones:
- The Secret to Success by Eric Thomas
- Crushing It! by Gary Vaynerchuck
- The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson
I would never tell you to stop listening to music. I don’t even think that’s possible. It is just as therapeutic to me as it is for anyone else. I simply suggest that you tone down the frequency. The world is a highly competitive place. I can guarantee that while you are on autopilot on the way to work someone is trying to gain a competitive edge. Don’t let a daily commute to be a handicap in your race to success.
Tip: Don’t try to eliminate music all together. Start with only your drive to work. Enjoy your music on the way home!
